The Violet Hour – XXXVI by friendsrecords

This is the The Violet Hour’s eponymous debut, produced by Rob Girardi (Beach House, Celebration). The album’s airy soundscape was recorded on to two-inch analog tape at Lord Baltimore Studios,  properly preserving each and every lush layer of dream-psych.

Baltimore’s The Violet Hour derived from the poem “The Wasteland” by T.S. Eliot, and consists of members Beth Varden and Andriana Pateris. The album was largely inspired by a trip to Peru taken by both band members. The lyrics throughout the album reflect their hike on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Songs like “Cloud Forest” swim through the stratosphere with dreamy guitars of a sonically dense texture. While many of the lyrics are mysterious and ambiguous, the album is emotionally and spiritually transcendent, a theme that is most noticeable on tracks “Evergreen” and “Southern Cross.”

Varden and Pateris have played in bands together since 1999, but have always wanted to work as a duo. While most of their work is written independently, when they come together with ideas the songs take on a life of their own to create the dream sounds of The Violet Hour.
